Do salt-free water softeners actually work?

This is the question that decides everything, so let’s be precise. Traditional water softeners — the salt based systems your parents owned — perform ion exchange: the resin beads swap the calcium and magnesium in your tap water for sodium, physically removing the hard water mineral content. That’s true water softening — the only process that produces genuinely soft water — and it’s why a salt based system needs salt, a brine tank, a drain, and a regeneration cycle that flushes salty wastewater.

A salt free water softener — more accurately, a water conditioner — takes a different path called template assisted crystallization.
