If that stack-up is your normal morning, the FS4’s ~12 GPM keeps it comfortable. Count what genuinely overlaps, not just showers.

Is the FS4 worth the extra money over the FS1?

Only if your peak demand justifies it — the treatment is identical, so the extra money buys flow headroom, nothing else. It’s worth it when your calculated peak lands within 1–2 GPM of the FS1’s ~9 GPM rating, when you have 4+ bathrooms, high-flow fixtures, a large family, or plans that will grow demand. It’s not worth it for a small home peaking at 4–5 GPM — the FS1 covers that with margin to spare.

Can I oversize a FutureSoft — is there any downside?

Functionally, no — an oversized salt-free conditioner treats water just as well and there’s no efficiency penalty like oversized salt-based softeners can have with regeneration. The only downsides are the higher upfront price and slightly larger tank footprint. That’s why my rule is comfort-based: don’t pay for headroom you’ll never use, but when you’re on the borderline between sizes, oversizing is the cheaper regret.

Does the size affect how well FutureSoft treats hard water?

No. FS1, FS4, and FS+ all use the same TAC conditioning media and handle the same hardness range (up to about 81 gpg) — a correctly-flowing FS1 conditions water exactly as well as an FS+. Size only determines how many gallons per minute can pass without restricting your pressure. And remember what conditioning means: it prevents scale but doesn’t remove the hardness minerals, so water won’t test soft or feel slippery with any size.

What flow rate do I need for my house?

Estimate your peak demand: add the GPM of every fixture that realistically runs at the same time on your busiest morning (showers ~2–2.5 each, washer ~2–4 while filling, faucets ~1–2, tubs ~4–7), then add 1–2 GPM of margin. Does a bigger FutureSoft remove more hardness?

No — and no size removes hardness at all. Every FutureSoft is a salt-free conditioner: it uses TAC to crystallize calcium and magnesium so they won’t stick as scale, but the minerals stay in your water, which still tests hard and won’t feel slippery. Bigger sizes just pass more flow. If you want actual mineral removal and soft-water feel, that’s a salt-based softener — a different category, not a bigger conditioner.

Does FutureSoft sizing work the same on well water?

The flow math is the same, but well water adds a critical prerequisite: FutureSoft requires pre-treatment for iron, manganese, sulfur (rotten-egg smell), copper, and oils, which would otherwise foul the TAC media — and warranty coverage excludes those well conditions. On a well, test your water first, handle contaminants with proper filtration (a well combo system is the practical route), and only then size the conditioning stage by your peak demand.
