Using the standard hardness scale, here’s roughly where the lines fall: water under 3 gpg is soft to slightly hard, 3–7 gpg is moderately hard, 7–10 gpg is hard, 10–15 gpg is very hard, and anything above 15 gpg is extremely hard. Those last two bands — very hard and extremely hard — are where the salt-free vs. salt-based decision really starts to matter, because that’s where the difference between conditioning minerals and removing them becomes something you can feel.

Lab reports often use ppm (mg/L). To get grains per gallon, divide ppm by ~17.1. So 171 ppm ≈ 10 gpg, and 257 ppm ≈ 15 gpg — right around the cutoff. Knowing your number in gpg makes the table below directly usable.

Why 15+ gpg changes the recommendation

First, an honest disclaimer: the 15 gpg cutoff is not a legal rule or a universal guarantee. It’s a practical homeowner decision point, and plenty of homes just above or below it could reasonably go either way. But there are real reasons the line sits around there, and they’re worth understanding so you can judge your own situation.

It comes down to three things. First, the difference between conditioning and softening. A salt-free conditioner changes how minerals behave so they don’t stick as scale — but the minerals are still there. A salt-based softener actually removes them. At low-to-moderate hardness, conditioning is enough to keep scale in check. As concentration climbs into the extremely-hard range, there’s simply more mineral load to manage, and conditioning becomes less reliable at fully keeping up.

Second, hard-water symptoms get more noticeable as hardness rises. At 6 gpg you might barely notice soap scum; at 20 gpg it’s a daily fight, along with heavier scale, more spotting, and dry skin. Conditioning doesn’t touch those “feel” symptoms at all — so the higher your hardness, the more you’ll miss what only true softening provides. Third, expectations. Someone with extremely hard water usually wants the strongest possible result — soft water, better lather, less soap — and that’s exactly what a conditioner can’t deliver. Put those together and, above ~15 gpg, a salt-based softener is simply the safer bet for a happy outcome.

The way I put it to homeowners: below the cutoff, salt-free’s trade-offs are easy to live with, and you gain no-salt, low-maintenance scale control. Above it, those trade-offs start to sting — you feel what you’re missing — and that’s when I point people to a salt-based softener instead.

Signs your water is too hard for salt-free alone

Beyond the raw gpg number, certain lived-in symptoms tell me a home has crossed into territory where salt-free alone probably won’t satisfy. If several of these sound like your house, you’re likely better served by a salt-based softener:

  • Your test reads 15+ gpg. The clearest signal — extremely hard water is salt-based territory.
  • Heavy, fast-returning scale on fixtures, shower glass, and the kettle even with effort.
  • Soap barely lathers and you’re using a lot of extra soap, shampoo, and detergent.
  • Persistent soap scum and film on tubs, tiles, and dishes that keeps coming back.
  • Dry skin and dull hair that you suspect is tied to your water.
  • Spotty dishes every cycle despite rinse aid, plus visible scale in the dishwasher.
  • You want the soft-water feel — full stop. If that’s a goal, hardness aside, salt-free won’t deliver it.

Notice the theme: these are mostly feel and soap problems, and those are exactly what conditioning can’t fix. Scale it can help with; lather, scum, and softness it cannot. The more of this list you’re living with, the more a salt-based softener is worth it.
